Downloading your e-mail to your PC |
| |
Requirements
Your PC needs to have e-mail client software
installed like MSOutlook or Outlook Express,
Eudora etc etc |
| |
Configure your e-mail
client software settings; Username:
eg bill@yourdomain.com Password:
as supplied by Zipzap POP
Server Address: mail.yourdomain.com
SMTP Server Address:
smtp.yourISP.com
Where "yourdomain.com" = your domain
name |
 |
Email you send is being rejected or
has an error |
| |
Email you send is sent via your SMTP server
settings in your email software e.g smtp.yourISP.com
This will be the ISP that provides Internet
Network connection to your PC eg Xtra / Ihug
etc
Your ISP has rules for allowing you to send
email through them, and those rules must be
complied with otherwise they will NOT transport
your email, please check with your
ISP for the rules they advocate.
e.g
1. Your reply to address should equal your
REAL email address,
2. The recipient of your email should have
a REAL email address.
3. Your ISP Network connection must be authenticated
by the ISP before allowing traffic to be sent
from your PC
If your ISP's SMTP server cannot deliver
to your recipients email address, then they
will bounce your email back to you as "undeliverable"
If your ISP's SMTP server determines that
you are not allowed to send email via thier
server, then you will get an error when sending
your email
If your ISP's SMTP server determines that
you are sending too large attachments or mass
email, they will block it
There are a number of other rules, but these
are the basics associated with sending email,
check with your ISP
|
 |
Email you send has not been received
by the recipient |
| |
Usually, the email has been blocked or caught
in a spam trap on your recipients email server
(ask the receipient to check) or not sent by
your ISP (ask your ISP) |
 |
What is a Spam Trap |
| |
These days spam traps are necessary to stop
the deluge of spam on the internet, responsible
and UCE compliant ISP's must manage spam filters
(traps) to stop the prolification of spam
Much spam is generated by virus activity and
computers compromised by Worms or worse Trojans
and rogue self mailers.
To combat these real threats,
1. Email users should ensure that their PC is
virus free and maintain a firewall
2. ISP's on the otherhand look at the "attributes"
of the email that is being sent from your PC
to check that it is not virus generated
3. ISP's automatically compare the email source
address (IP address or domain name) with the
RBL's (the email spammer blacklists) - if a
match is encountered the ISP will either reject
the email or place it in a spam trap for further
investigation.
